- An attempt to influence the decisions made by officials.
Civil Rights Act of 1957:
- Sphere headed by LBJ to give the attorney general the power over schools and to desegregate the schools. Also gave him government authority over African American Rights.
Title XI:
- 1972- protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs. Also for activities that receive federal financial assistance.
Great Society:
- LBJ domestic agenda, war on poverty, and racial injustice.
Upward Bound:
- 1965- by Higher Education Act, provides support for college prep, high school students, and low income families. This also applied if neither of the two parents had a college degree.
Court Decisions:
- Law or decision that was made by the courts.
Voting Rights Act of 1965:
- Signed by LBJ, prohibits racial discrimination in voting, and enforces fourteenth and fifteenth amendments.
Civil Rights Act of 1964:
- Signed by LBJ, outlawed discrimination based on sex, race, color, religion, nationality, or origin. This ended unequal voting registration and racial segregation.
Head Start:
- 1965- War on poverty, promote school readiness for low income families.
Amendment:
- To make a change to the Constitution.
Federal Housing Authority:
- 1934, 1950's - 1970's- helped create affordable housing for elderly and low income families.
Affirmative Action:
- 1961, JFK made policies that provided equal access to women missionaries and education.
Sit-In:
- Protest where one or more people occupy and area to promote school, social, or political change. Happened throughout the South, protesting segregation.
Freedom Rides:
- Activist in 1961 road to challenge non enforcement of desegregation cases, that violated rights.
Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.:
- April 14th, 1968.
- Memphis, Tennessee
- Occurred outside of his hotel room.
Letters from Birmingham Jail:
- April 16th, 1963.
- Defends non violent protest, duty to break unjust laws.
March on Washington:
- August 28th, 1963.
- 720,000 people protesting African American Segregation.
"I Have a Dream.":
- Martin Luther King Jr. Marched on Washington homage to Emancipation Proclamation.
Montgomery Bus Boycott:
- Result of Rosa Parks arrest.
- Boycott lasted 12/1-1955 to 12/2-1956.
